Significance and Brief History

It officially began in the United States in 1968 as President Lyndon B. Johnson initiated a week-long celebration. It later expanded to a month-long observance in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. The starting date of September 15th marks the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico’s Independence Day on September 16th and Chile’s Independence Day on September 18th also fall within this period.
