Facts

Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day; it’s not even “Mexico Day.” It’s the celebration of a Mexican victory over France (Battle of Puebla, 1862) in a war that Mexico lost in 1864, but then they could win with the help of the United States in 1867.

More popular in the U.S. than in Mexico...

Cinco de Mayo has become associated with celebrating Mexican-American culture, celebrations that began in California in 1863. Throughout the years, this day has gained nationwide popularity beyond those of Mexican-American heritage thanks to advertising campaigns by food and drink companies.

Celebrations in Mexico

The commemoration of the battle continues to be mostly ceremonial, such as through military parades or battle reenactments. The city of Puebla marks the event with various festivals and reenactments of the battle.

For many Mexicans, however, this day is like any other. It’s not a federal holiday, so offices, banks, and stores remain open.

Foodies

Although everyone loves tacos, tortillas, beers, and margaritas, Cinco de Mayo’s official dish is Mole Poblano.
